Gary Kaplan in Africa
Gary Kaplan is a successful entrepreneur from Brooklyn who has traveled the world and achieved great success in his career. A chance encounter with a group of women in Zambia led Garry to become more involved in charity and inspired him to help build a well that would bring water to the area. He later created a foundation that changed thousands of people’s lives. The HG Kaplan Foundation provides aid and works in areas such as health care, education, and community development in Latin America.
The children of the earth make up about one-third of the world population and represent the entirety of the future. In the 1990’s Gary relocated from America to Costa Rica with his family, where he saw widespread poverty caused by lack of opportunities and natural disasters. As a businessman, Gary is excellent at solving problems and often comes up with creative solutions. He’s taken his business skills and transferred them to the charity sector. One of Gary’s first projects was helping Costa Rican families who had lost their homes and livelihoods due to a mudslide. The foundation rebuilt homes and worked with the local community to improve their quality of life in a time when they truly needed it
The foundation primarily focuses on children and meeting their basic needs, These kids grow up in some of the most impoverished areas of Latin America in unique ways. Every child should get a good night’s sleep and be well fed so that they can concentrate on their schoolwork. Gary Kaplan and The HG Kaplan Foundation recruit volunteers in the area to build the children new beds, and they request donations from local grocery store chains. They ask for food that’s still good but is nearing its sell-by date. These simple gestures help to improve communities and improve the health and wellbeing of the children who will grow into the next generation of leaders in that community.
The HG Kaplan Foundation also provides health education to improve safety, hygiene, and nutrition. Hand washing and healthy eating habits are taught to children from a young age to help avoid sickness from germs that can lead to major illnesses and sometimes even death at a very young age. The foundation even offers daycare services for young children so that their parents can go out and earn a living.

Helping Refugees
In 2018, Gary Kaplan’s foundation was integral in helping many of the 55,000 refugees who had fled from Nicaragua due to political unrest. Costa Rica takes in many refugees but with resources stretched thin, many of those taken in lacked basic essentials. The HG Kaplan Foundation partnered with other organizations that were helping the refugees and provided financial assistance. With the additional support from Gary Kaplan and his organization, the others were able to offer resources to families that needed help the most. With the resources provided, the refugee children were able to have fun and play, attend school and community centers and start building a new life for themselves.
Conclusion
Gary Kaplan is an inspiration to many and has shown that everyone can help make a difference.
